Potassium, Serum

Description

Potassium is both an electrolyte and a mineral. It helps keep the water and electrolyte balance of the body. Potassium is also important in the transmission of nerve and muscle impulses. Potassium level are in an inverse relationship with sodium levels and is also affected by aldosterone.

Indications

Hyperkalemia is caused by defective renal excretion, Addison’s disease. Hypokalemia can be produced by gastrointestinal fluid loss (vomiting, diarrhea) renal disease, certain diuretics and hyperaldosteronism. Hypokalemia (low potassium) has been found in >90% of hypertensive patients with primary aldosteronism. See Also Hypokalaemia and Hyperkalemia
