Description
Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) is a rapid, qualitative test designed especially to detect human hemoglobin (hHgb) in fecal samples using immunochemical
methods, improving specificity for the detection of lower gastrointestinal disorders, including colorectal cancers and adenomas, without the need for
dietary restrictions. Screening for colorectal cancer is likely to improve the odds of detecting cancer at an early stage, reducing mortality.
Indications
Although no food restrictions are required some precautions are needed such as: • Not to collect the stool samples if patient has visible blood in stool or in urine. • Not to collect the stool samples if patient has bleeding hemorrhoids, or has experienced strain during bowel movement. • Days of menstruation or 3 days before or after must be avoided for female patients. •Alcohol, aspirin and other medications taken in excess may cause gastrointestinal irritation resulting in occult bleeding. Such substances should be discontinued at least 48 hours prior to testing.
