Spectrophotometric measurement of methemoglobin, often with sulfhemoglobin, in whole blood.
Indications
Evaluates cyanosis/hypoxia disproportionate to pulse oximetry or suspected oxidant-drug/chemical exposure; may support assessment of congenital methemoglobinemia.

Special Precautions
Collect heparinized whole blood; protect from light and analyze/ship promptly. Do not freeze. Record oxygen therapy and suspected oxidant exposure.
