RPR is a modification of the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test. Advantages of RPR over VDRL includes: more stable antigen, does not require sample heat inactivation and ease of visualization of results. Contrary to what the name suggests, the RPR test has been accepted as a standard test for syphilis only with serum, but not with plasma.
دواعي الإستعمال
RPR is used as a screening test for Syphilis. The test is also useful in assessing treponemal infection status, but is a non-treponemal test which detects antibodies against lipoidal antigens released from damaged host cells and lipid components of the treponeme and thus, indirect indicators of active infection. Positive results in association with positive syphilis specific tests such as Treponema pallidum Haem- Agglutination (TPHA) or Fluorescent Treponemal Absorption (FTA) results indicate active / current untreated infection. However, RPR is prone to false positive results due to autoimmune elements such as anticardiolipin abs and others. These false positive results can be ruled out by performing more specific tests (TPHA, FTA or equivalent).
