Anti-Diuretic Hormone(Vasopressin), a peptide hormone synthesised by the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pitutary, is essential for cardiovascular homeostasis. Vasopressin acts on its main target organ (the kidneys) where it alters the tubules water permeability. Vasopressin is mainly used to treat variceal hemorrhage and diabetes insipidus.

Anti-Diuretic Hormone (Vasopressin) test is used to differentiate central diabetes insipidus (inability of the kidneys to conserve water, which leads to frequent urination and pronounced thirst), a hypothalamus-pituitary disease due to decreased secretion of vasopressin, from nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (kidney resistance to vasopressin).
