Many haematological (and other) diagnoses can be made by careful examination of the peripheral blood film. It is also necessary for interpretation of the RBC indices.

Certain morphological changes are specific to or may accompany red blood cell / Haemoglobin or white blood cell disorders such as megaloblastic anaemia, thalassaemia iron-deficiency anaemia, dyserythropoetic anaemia, sideroblastic anaemia, haemolytic anaemia and different types of leukaemia. In addition to blood cell disorders, there are certain morphological changes that are associated with liver disease, infection, lead poisoning and postsplenectomy.
