The carbohydrate antigen CA 50 is expressed in the epithelial tissue during the process of neoplastic transformation as in transitional cell bladder carcinoma.

CA50 antigen can be utilised as a prognostic marker in patients with malignant bladder tumours. Higher serum antigen levels are associated with undifferentiated tumours and advanced stages of the disease. Other malignancies associated with higher levels of CA50 are colorectal carcinoma (prevalence of around 70%) and pancreatic carcinoma. CA50 is also increased in several nonmalignant liver diseases.

Values obtained with different assay methods should not be used interchangeably. The same specimen, serum or plasma, should be used consistently when monitoring a patient. Avoid grossly hemolysed samples.
