Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), formed in the kidney, is the nuclear androgen in the gonads and in other organs. It is a potent sexual hair growth factor. In males, DHT is formed peripherally from testosterone and is important for prostate development and the masculinisation of the external genital in the embryonic stage. In females, it is formed from androstenedione.
