Electrolytes, Serum

Sodium: Sodium is the major cation of the extracellular fluid, responsible for almost half the osmolality of plasma; it plays a central role in the distribution of water. Potassium: Potassium is the major intracellular cation. lt is involved in the transmission of nerve and muscle impulses and abnormal concentrations adversely affect cardiac function. Chloride: Used to evaluate electrolytes, acid-base balance, and water balance. Chloride generally increases and decreases with plasma or serum sodium.
