Occult Blood, Faeces

Fecal occult blood is a term for blood present in the faeces that is not visibly apparent. Occult blood may originate anywhere from gingiva to the rectum. Some drugs like salicylates, aspirin, steroids,
indomethacin, rauwolfia derivatives, colchicine and iron therapy are also associated with gastrointestinal bleeding.

Positive in peptic ulcers, renal fissures, gastritis, variceal bleeding, diverticular disease, G.I. polyps, and cancer of the colon.

Avoid Haemoglobin or iron-rich foods (liver, kidney or red meat) 3 days before testing.
