TSH Receptor Antibodies(Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulin), Serum

The TSH receptor is critical in the development, growth and function of the thyroid gland. The human TSH receptor is considered to be the predominant auto-antigen in autoimmune thyroid hyper-function of Graves’ disease. Its expression in extra-thyroid tissue such as connective tissue may be, responsible for the extra-thyroidal manifestations of this disease. Hyperthyroidism and Graves’ disease are caused by stimulation of the thyroid by TSH receptor antibodies produced primarily within the thyroid gland itself. The production of these antibodies is probably due to a genetic clonal lack of suppressor T cells.
