Increased urinary urea or urea nitrogen is found in increased dietary protein intake, hyperthyroidism and after surgery. Urea is decreased in liver disease, renal damage and insufficiency, toxaemia and convalescence. In addition, low urinary urea levels are found in normal children and infants, during pregnancy and with low protein/high carbohydrate diet.
