Vitamin H (Biotin/ B7), Serum, Plasma

Biotin, an essential water-soluble vitamin, is the coenzyme for four von Willebrand (Factor VIII Related Ag), Plasma carboxylases in humans. These carboxylases are involved in amino acid catabolism, fatty acid synthesis and gluconeogenesis. In its action as a coenzyme, biotin becomes covalently attached to these carboxylases. Symptoms associated with biotin deficiency include, scaly dermatitis, pallor, irritability, anorexia, nausea and hair loss. Biotin deficiency occurs in patients with Leiner’s disease and in patients with biotinidase and carboxylase deficiency. In addition, biotin deficiency can occur in patients with short small intestine.
