Description
Only a small amount of bilirubin is found in amniotic fluid. Its concentration decreases as gestation continues. Bilirubin concentration in amniotic fluid can increase in several disease conditions of the foetus and pregnant mother. See Also Liley’s Zone for Amniotic Fluid
Indications
Measurement of bilirubin in amniotic fluid is used in the assessment of haemolytic disease of the foetus due to Rh incompatibility. Amniotic fluid bilirubin levels can increase as a result of increased maternal serum bilirubin due to hepatitis or hemolytic crisis.
