Bleeding Time

Description

The test is performed by making incisions on the ear lobe (Duke Method) and measuring the time the icisions bleed. Cessation of bleeding is dependant on adequate number of platelets and of the ability of platelets to adhere to the subendothelium and to form aggregates.

Indications

This is a diagnostic test for platelet-related bleeding, a measure of efficacy in various forms of therapy and a prognosticator of abnormal bleeding. Increased bleeding time is observed in vascular defects, coagulation defects, decreased platelets count, congenital thrombocytopathies and acquired thrombocytopathy.
