Description
Borreliosis or lyme disease, transmitted by ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex, is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi which is a motile, helically shaped (spirochete) bacterium with multiple endoflagella that can be visualised by dark-field or phase-contrast microscopy. Infection with B. burgdorferi can result in dermatological, neurological, cardiac, and musculoskeletal disorders.
Indications
The detection of B. burgdorferi specific IgG antibodies is suggestive of current or past infection. However, due to the high cross reactivity of B. burgdorferi specific antibodies with other bacterial antigens, confirmation of positive cases by immuno-blot is recommended.
