Centromere Antibodies, Serum

Description

Progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) is a systemic multi-organ autoimmune disease that leads to vascular connective tissue fibrosis and sclerosis. Several variants of PSS such as CREST (Calcinosis, Raynaud’s phenomenon, Oesophageal dysfunction, Sclerodactyly and Telangiectasia) syndrome, multiple sclerosis and scleroderma exist that have varying outcome and prognosis.

Indications

Centromere antibodies are mostly associated with CREST syndrome with an incidence of around 70%. These antibodies are of prognostic value in diagnosing Raynaud’s phenomenon. Anti Centromere antibodies could also be found in some patients with primary biliary cirrhosis with an incidence of 10-20 %.
