Description
CoQ10 (ubiquinone) is an integral part of the energy generating system. It is most abundant in the heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and spleen. Its concentration in skeletal muscle is only 5% of that found in the heart. CoQ10 acts as a powerful antioxidant, scavenging lipid radicals and inhibiting lipid peroxidation. CoQ10 plus α-tocopherol have additive antioxidant effects. CoQ10 also functions to maintain α-tocopherol in the reduced state in cell membranes and to maintain ascorbate in the reduced state both inside and outside the cell.
Indications
Deficiency of CoQ10 may exacerbate the poor contractility of myocardial cells in patients with heart failure. The extent of myocardial CoQ10 deficiency correlates with the clinical severity of heart failure. Administration of CoQ10 can protect against Adriamycin (Anthracycline; an anti-neoplastic agent) induced cardio-toxicity.
