Resistance to osmotic lysis, i.e. low osmotic fragility, is a characteristic of β-Thalassemia. Any severe anaemia including iron deficiency, sickle cell anemia, and sideroblastic anemia will also give decreased osmotic fragility. It is increased in almost all cases of hereditary spherocytosis, acquired hemolytic anaemia & most cases of hemolytic diseases of new-borns.
