Glucose, CSF

Changes in blood sugar are reflected in the CSF glucose. See Also Fasting Blood Sugar (Glucose), Blood

Raised level is seen in hyperglycemia, pyogenic meningitis, epidemic encephalitis and multiple sclerosis. Glucose level is usually normal in viral meningitis but is decreased in tuberculosis meningitis, mumps encephalitis, sarcoidosis, and cryptococcal meningitis. CSF glucose may return to normal rapidly after antibiotic therapy.
