Description

Indications

Raised level is seen in hyperglycemia, pyogenic meningitis, epidemic encephalitis and multiple sclerosis. Glucose level is usually normal in viral meningitis but is decreased in tuberculosis meningitis, mumps encephalitis, sarcoidosis, and cryptococcal meningitis. CSF glucose may return to normal rapidly after antibiotic therapy.

Sample Type, Quantity & Conditions

1 ml CSF Stability: 7 Days at 2-8 °C 30 Days at (-15)-(-25) °C

Special Precautions

Process immediately to avoid false results. If three tubes are available, this test should be run on tube number 2. A request for a CSF glucose should coincide with serum or plasma glucose. Ideally, CSF glucose value should be approximately 60% of the serum/plasma values.

Normal Range

Adults: 40-70 mg/dL Children: 60-80 mg/dL
