Glucose Tolerance Test

Description

The latest WHO recommendation states that following a 75g glucose _load, a 2 hr plasma glucose level of 200 mg/dL is diagnostic of diabetes, but below 145 mg/dL excludes this. Patient preparation: Patient must fast for 12 hrs, refrain from drinking (except water) and smoking before or during test. Indications

An essential test for initial diagnosis of early diabetes. Various endocrine disorders such as Cushing’s syndrome and acromegaly also show impaired glucose tolerance. A ‘’Lag’’ type curve may occur in reactive hypoglycaemia, after gastrectomy or in very severe liver disease.

Sample Type, Quantity & Conditions

1 ml Serum 1 ml Li-Heparin, K2-EDTA, NaF/Na2-EDTA, KF/Na2-EDTA, NaF/K-Oxalate, or NaF/Citrate/Na2-EDTA Plasma Stability: 8 Hours at 15-25 °C 72 Hours at 2-8 °C Stability in Fluoride Plasma: 3 Days at 15-25 °C

Special Precautions

8 hours fasting is required.
