Guanidinoacetic Acid, Urine

Description

Most guanidinoacetic acid, an intermediate metabolite and the precursor of creatine, is produced from L-arginine in the presence of glycine by glycine amidinotransferase in the kidney and is partly
excreted in human urine.

Indications

Urinary guanidinoacetic acid level tends to decrease in disorders of renal metabolism. Levels are depressed in end-stage renal disease. This test is also useful in following up kidney transplant patients.
