HOMA-2

Description

The homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) is a method used to quantify insulin resistance and beta-cell function by a mathematical equation. Tthe measurement of insulin resistance is based on the glucose level and the insulin level in a fasting state. The original equation is based on the formula:
HOMA = fasting Insulin (µU/mL) x [fasting Glucose (mg/dL)/405]The concept relies on the fact that elevated fasting glucose levels reflects a compensatory mechanism that maintains fasting insulin levels when there is a reduced insulin secretory capacity, and that fasting insulin levels are elevated in direct proportion to diminished insulin sensitivity. However,a more reliable measurement is based on a computerized program which measures insulin resistance more accurately, known as HOMA-2 (version 2).
