Immunofixation, Serum

Description

Serum protein electrophoresis is widely used in clinical laboratories, especially for the detection and identification of paraproteins. The classification of paraproteins is accomplished by immunoelectrophoresis or immunofixation. Immunofixation detects both small monoclonal proteins and large, polymerised monoclonal proteins more readily than immunoelectrophoresis. It distinguishes between monoclonal, oligoclonal and polyclonal elevations and characterises the specific light and heavy chain components of a monoclonal protein.

Indications

Immunofixation electrophoresis is useful in the identification of abnormal proteins by means of their molecular size, especially in diagnosis of myeloma and light chain disease. In addition, it is useful in delineating possible lymphoproliferative processes, defining deficiencies of specific immunoglobulins, and the identification of heavy and light chain (Kappa or Lambda) types of monoclonal immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM & IgA) in serum.
