Description
B- type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a cardiac neuro-hormone secreted from the ventricles in response to volume expansion and pressure overload. In general, BNP has a natriuretic and vasodilatory effect and suppresses the renin-angiotensinaldosterone system.
Indications
BNP is a highly sensitive and specific marker for left ventricular dysfunction and is used to follow up ventricular function in response to medical management. BNP determinations have shown the potential to be a good prognostic marker for morbidity and mortality in patients with heart failure, including predicting future cardiac events in patients with acute exacerbation. BNP appears to have clinical utility in excluding a diagnosis of heart failure in patients with symptoms of breathlessness or fluid retention.
