Indications
High resolution agarose electrophoresis of CSF is particularly valuable in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), where the presence of oligoclonal bands in the electrophoretic γ-globulin region can be demonstrated in a high percentage of patients. These bands are produced by a limited number of B-cell clones in the CNS. Oligoclonal bands also occur in the CSF of certain patients with neurosyphilis and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. These bands are also useful in the diagnosis of cryptococcal meningitis, polyneuritis and neurosyphilis. As an indicator of MS, this test has a sensitivity of 77% and a specificity of 99%.
