Description
Carbohydrate malabsorption is a major cause of the watery diarrhoea and electrolyte imbalance seen in patients with short bowel syndrome. As a result of bacterial fermentation, the stool becomes acidic with a high concentration of lactic acid. The pH measurement reflects this process. The unabsorbed sugars are measured as reducing substances.
Indications
Used in the diagnosis of deficiency in intestinal enzymes, primarily disaccharidase, in infants with persistent diarrhea.
