Description
Disorders with Heamoglobin S (Hb S) include sickle cell trait, and combinations of the Hb S gene with other disorders:; α and β-Thalassemias and α and β-chain structural Haemoglobin variants.
Indications
This is a screening test for Hb S or other rare sickling Haemoglobin’s, such as Hb C-Harlem. Abnormal elevation of total serum proteins, particularly gamma globulins, may cause false positive interpretations. False negatives may occur if the concentration of Haemoglobin S is below the level of sensitivity. 10% levels of Hb S are frequently observed in infants younger than 3 months of age. Therefore, it is recommended that infants younger than 3 months should not be tested.
