Description
Some skeletal muscle disorders have an autoimmune aetiology. Myasthenia gravis is one disease condition that is associated with skeletal muscle antibodies. In this condition, the specific antibodies are acetylcholine receptor antibodies. See Also Acetylcholine Receptor Antibodies, Serum
Indications
This is a screening test for myasthenia. A positive result should be confirmed by performing the more specific test “Acetylcholine Receptor Antibodies Titre”. In addition to Myasthenia gravis, skeletal muscle antibodies can be found in patients with rheumatic fever and myocardial infarction.
