Description
Sudan III test is a staining procedure used to detect and visualize lipids, triglycerides, and lipoproteins in biological samples. Faecal fat is measured to aid diagnosis of conditions causing poor absorption of dietary fat resulting in steatorrhea.
Indications
The value of this test is that the amount of dietary fat intake is known and used in evaluation of the results. Increased levels are found in cases of pancreatic and intestinal diseases resulting in dietary fat malabsorption.

Special Precautions
A dietary fat intake of approx. 60 g/d should be maintained for at least 2 days before sample collection. Sample should be maintained at 37°C during transport. Sample collected without preservatives, fixatives or contamination by topical applications, including creams.
