Investigation of synovial fluid is useful in the diagnosis of joint diseases such as septic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis,haemarthrosis and ankylosing spondylitis.

Detailed indications of the nature of joint diseases are given by analysis of the color, crystals, degree of turbidity, bacterial content and rheumatoid factors of the punctate.
