Description
Benzene is toxic to bone marrow and exerts leukaemogenic action upon
metabolic activation. Trans muconic acid, a metabolite of benzene, is
useful in monitoring benzene exposure, such as benzene uptake from
inhaled cigarette smoke and metabolism at low concentrations.
Indications
This test is useful in monitoring benzene exposure. Levels of trans muconic acid in the urine of smokers are about 4-5 times higher than in non-smokers.
