Description
U. urealyticm is the major Mycoplasma species involved in sexually transmitted disease in men. U. urealyticum is a self-replicating prokaryote belonging to the taxonomic class Mollicutes, which lack a cell wall. It usually colonises the urethra of asymptomatic sexually active men. U. urealyticm is also found in the genital tract of between 40-80% of women of childbearing age.
Indications
In women, U. urealyticum colonisation has been reported as the cause of premature delivery, low birth weight, congenital pneumonia and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. While in men, it can cause urethritis, prostatitis and epididymitis. In addition, it is implicated in infertility.
