Pre-Marital Testing

Why is pre-marital testing necessary?

  • To identify the presence of the hereditary disease gene for “Thalassemia” trait (carrier state).  This genetic disease is relatively prevalent in the Middle East and the Mediterranean. (See Thalassemia pamphlet for further details).
  • To identify the presence of the contagious Hepatitis B virus in either party to prevent its future transmission to one’s wife/husband or children.  Hepatitis B is relatively prevalent in Jordan, and vaccines are available.
  • To identify blood groups for Rh  factor compatibility.
  • To identify the presence of Rubella immunity in the female.  Rubella (German Measles) is generally a mild viral infection in children and adults, but can produce severe infection in a fetus, resulting in spontaneous abortion, still birth or congenital rubella syndrome.  Immunization to Rubella virus is available.
What tests should be carried out?
  •  CBC and blood film
  •  Blood grouping
  •  Hb Pattern Analysis (for Thalassemia)
  •  Hepatitis B Surface Antigen
  •  Rubella IgG (females only)

Additional Optional tests:

  •  HIV
  •  Syphilis
  •  Chlamydia
  •  Seminal fluid analysis (males only)
  •  Fertility hormones
