Description
The rapid antigen detection test (RADT) for Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is a quick diagnostic tool used to detect the presence of GAS antigens from throat swabs, usually providing results within 5 to 10 minutes. It employs immunochromatographic methods using antibodies specific for GAS antigens. It detects both viable and non-viable GAS microorganisms directly from throat swabs and is widely used in clinical settings to help diagnose bacterial pharyngitis (strep throat) caused by GAS.
Indications
Positive RADT results allow for prompt antibiotic treatment, helping to reduce complications and transmission. When RADT is negative but clinical suspicion remains high, a confirmatory throat culture is often recommended, especially in children, because culture is more sensitive.
