Description
Somatostatin is a neurotransmitter play an important role in the neuroendocrine system regulating neurotransmission in the brain, as well as in the regulation of secretion processes in the anterior pituitary gland of growth hormone, the pancreas, and the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, somatostatin may control cell proliferation in normal and tumorous tissues as well.
Indications
Somatostatin levels are increased in somatostatinoma (somatostatin producing tumours), medullary thyroid carcinoma, pheochromocytoma, duodenal ulcer, active ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and alcoholic liver disease. Decreased levels are seen post vagotomy.
