Adenovirus Abs, IgA

Description

Serologic test that measures adenovirus-specific IgA antibodies in serum; the reported titer reflects antibody reactivity.

Indications

Adjunctive evaluation of suspected adenovirus infection. Adenovirus may cause respiratory disease, conjunctivitis, cystitis, diarrhea, hepatitis, myocarditis, or encephalitis.

Special Precautions

Use serum and interpret the antibody titer with the patient's symptoms and clinical history. Mayo notes that serologic testing may have faster turnaround but can be less sensitive than culture or PCR; it should be used as an aid to diagnosis, not alone.
