Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Genotyping, RT-PCR, Serum

Description

HCV genotypes have a geographical distribution pattern. HCV genotype 4 constitutes up to 90 % of infections in Egypt and is common in the Middle East, genotype 5 is common in southern Africa, and Genotype 6 is generally limited to Southeast Asia. It is also a criterion in selecting candidate patients for antiviral therapy because certain genotypes are more responsive to treatment than others. See Also Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Total Antibodies, Serum

Indications

Patients with genotype 2 or 3 are expected to have a high likelihood of treatment success (75%-85%) and therefore may not require a liver biopsy. For patients with types 1 and 4 a liver biopsy in required as well as a baseline viral load measurement.
