Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)

Description

Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is a test based on the analysis of fetal cell-free DNA (cfDNA) circulating within the mothers blood stream. The test allows for the identification of chromosomal abnormalities and microdeletions. More advanced tests even allow the analysis of specifc genetic mutations. The advantage of NIPT testing as opposed to more tradiotional methods is the positive predictive value (PPV), which can reach as high as 99% for certain disorders.

Indications

NIPT testing can be carried out as early as 9-10 weeks of gestation. However, although this is an accurate test, it is still classed as a screening test and any positive results should be confirmed by amnioscentesis before drastic decisions are taken.
