Carotene β-, Serum

Description

β-carotene is one of a number of naturally occurring carotenoids, some of which have vitamin A activity. Carotenoids are widespread in plants and in photosynthetic bacteria, where they serve two essential functions; accessory pigments in photosynthesis and photo-protection. Provitamin A carotenoids can be converted enzymatically in the intestinal mucosa to ultimately yield vitamin A, which is required for vision, maintenance of differentiated epithelial, mucus secretion, and reproduction.

Indications

Useful in the confirmation of vitamin A deficiency. There is evidence that the consumption of higher quantities of carotene through eating carotinoid rich vegetables is associated with decreased risk of developing cancer, cardiovascular disease and age-related macular degeneration / cataract.
