Description
There are over 70 known genotypes of HPV. Certain types (low risk) are known to be associated with genital warts, while others (high and intermediate risk) are considered the factor most strongly and consistently associated with cervical cancer. Detection of HPV by PCR is used to detect and confirm viral infection. Also used in the resolution of cases with equivocal histopathology or cytopathology. This test can identify 20 different oncogenic strains of HPV (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68, 26, 53, 67, 70, 73 and 82). Highest risk is associated with types 16 and 18, and low risk is associated mainly with types 6 and 11.
