Adenovirus, Stool

Description

Adenovirus type 40 & 41 (Ad40 / Ad41) are second in importance as causative agents of gastro-enteritis after Rotaviruses. Non-pathogenic types of adenovirus may exist in faeces; therefore, the discrimination between Ad40 / 41 and other types is essential for reaching the correct diagnosis.

Indications

This test is useful in the diagnosis of infantile gastroenteritis.

Patients should also be evaluated for rotavirus and for possible bacterial gastroenteritis.
